The Coronation of Mary in Heaven

Diego Velasquez (1599-1660)

Diego Velasquez, a Spanish painter, was born in Seville on June 6, 1599.  He quickly became the country's greatest Baroque artist.

In August of 1629, Velasquez left Barcelona for Genoa and spent most of the next 2 years traveling in Italy.  From Genoa he proceeded to Milan, Venice, Florence and Rome.  He returned to Spain from Naples in January 1631.  In the course of his journey he closely studied both the art of the Renaissance and contemporaneous painting.
